Als wir heute Morgen das Büro betraten, war die erste Email von Widdendream. Natürlich waren wir neugierig, wer oder was das sein soll. dark-kisses ist bekanntlich unsere Expertin für Synthetisch-Electronische Ergüsse, und präsentiert die Sendung “Sound Seduction” – für die sie auch das gerade eingetroffene Material in Betracht zieht, nachdem wir die Worte des Duos gelesen hatten. Also machten wir uns einen Pott Kaffee, gingen auf den Balkon, und hörten in der Morgensonne, wie Widdendream wohl sein könnten.

Widdendream ist ein Duo aus Geyserville in Kalifornien/USA. Ein kleiner Küstenort nahe San Francisco. Mei-Lee Chen (Gesang) und Alex Clark (Komposition) heißen die beiden, die das Projekt Widdendream komplett in Eigenregie führen. Das Album kommt am 20. Juli 2018 auf den Markt – alles aus eigener Anstrengung heraus.
Und hier ist auch schon, was wir denken:
Die Selbstbeschreibung trifft den Nagel auf den Kopf: Das Klangbild ist insgesamt düster, stark 80er-lastig und die Rhythmen sind sehr gut ausgearbeitet und voller Abwechslung. Was ebenfalls deutlich ins Ohr fällt ist, dass der Fokus bei Alex Clark mehr darauf liegt sphärische Flächen statt eingängiger Hooklines zu komponieren. – Ein weiteres Charakteristikum der 80er Underground-/Dark-Wave-Szene. (Zumindest, wie ich sie damals wahrgenommen habe). Die Wahl der Akorde und Noten geschieht einfühlsam und ist bemerkenswert beruhigend und treibend zugleich….
Die Stimme von Mei-Lee Chen passt sich auf den Punkt in die Klangbilder ein. Die melancholischen Moll-Töne trifft sie ebenso wie die Dur-Töne. Mit ihrem Gesang bringt sie uns genau in die Stimmung, die uns mit dem Text vermittelt werden soll. Sie singt klar, mit sauberer Aussprache. Scheinbar kann sie einfach und mühelos zwischen den Tonlagen wechseln. Vollkommen egal ob eine #-Note vorliegt, oder nicht. Schnelle Nummern überzeugen genauso wie Balladen.
Aber um offen und ehrlich zu sein: es gibt schon eine Sache, die hätte besser sein können. Die Anordnung der Lieder. Nachdem wir drei Songs am Stück gehört haben, entsteht der Eindruck, dass die Flächen sich gleichen – was natürlich nicht so ist. Darum schrieb ich auch, “entsteht der Eindruck” – eine vollkommen persönliche Empfindung, die sich nicht mit der Wahrnehmung anderer decken muss.
Unser Fazit:
Wir mögen das Album Widdendream – In The Night! Es ist echt, und absolut gut gemacht – ganz besonders für eine Eigenveröffentlichung.

The original feedback for Mei-Lee and Alex
When we got an email from Widdendream, it was the first one of the day to be opened. And of course we were curious about, what it could be. dark-kisses is our expert for synthetic-electronic effusions and hosts the show “Sound Seduction” -for which she considered to choose your music, after we read your words. So we took a mug of coffee, and went to our balcony and sat in the sunrise to hear, what “Widdendream” would be like.
Now, here’s what we both think, after we listened to the whole album:
Your self description really nails, what your music is like. The soundscape is dark, strong 80’s like and the rhythms are very well developed, and full of diversity. What also hits the ear very notably is your focus is more into spheric athmo, than into hooky melodies – another strong characteristic of the underground of 80’s Gothic/Dark Wave (at least, what I experienced in those days). The choice of chords and notes is sensefully, and remarkably as well soothing as driving.
The voice of Mei-Lee suits the soundscape of each song on point. The melancholic Moll-notes are hit as perfect as the Dur-notes. The vocals catches us right in the mood, the message wants to tell. She sings clear, the pronounciation is proper. She seems to change the key tone easily and without any efforts. No matter if there is a # note, or not. The uptempo tracks are as convincing as the ballads.
But to be honest and frank: there is one thing, that needs a little adjustment. The order of tracks could have been a little better. After listening to three songs in one, one gets a feeling, the ethereal parts are rather equal. Of course it’s not. That’s why I wrote, “gets a feeling”. AND this is a very personal impression, which doesn’t have to match other peoples perception.
So, our conclusion for Widdendream “In The Night” is, we like the album. It is genuine, and absolutely well done – especially as a self release. dark-kisses and I are giving 9 of 10 points.
